Church of the Covenant is built.
1867
Architect: Richard Upjohn. Originally the Central Congregational Church (second), it is designed in the Gothic Revival style, thought to be modeled after the Cathedral of Upsala in Sweden, and located at 67 Newbury Street. The steeple is the tallest in the city up to this time. The interior, originally finished in black walnut, is extensively renovated between 1894 and 1896 by Louis Comfort Tiffany, who replaces 42 of the 47 stained glass windows with those of his own design, making it the largest collection in any U.S. church. The Welte-Tripp Philharmonic Organ is installed in 1929.
